Learn More About Common Foot and Ankle Issues and Get Your Fix

Foot and ankle issues are very common and affect millions of people each year. According to FootVitals, our feet make up over 25% of our body's bones, and there are a lot of places things can go wrong. In the sections below, we'll walk through common foot and ankle injuries and diagnoses, how they occur, and what we can do to prevent and recover from them!
Achilles Tendinitis
The achilles tendon runs from the base of our ankle to the bottoms of our calve muscles. Achilles tendinitis occurs when the achilles tendon is inflamed and can cause pain in the achilles region.
Ankle Sprain
The majority of ankle sprains occur when we step on something, our foot rolls inward, and we stretch things on the outside of the ankle (lateral ankle sprain or high ankle sprain). When we sprain an ankle, the soft tissues surrounding our ankle tendons get overly stretched or tear, resulting in pain.
Morton's Neuroma
Morton's Neuroma is when a nerve bundle in between the toes gets irritated. Tightness in the muscles surrounding our toe bones can lead to pinching down on the nerves and cause inflammation and irritation.
Peroneal Tendinitis
With peroneal tendinitis, we experience pain on the outside of our ankle. It occurs when we experience inflammation in the muscles or tendons highlighted in the video above.
Plantar Fasciitis
The plantar fascia is located on the bottom of the foot. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia becomes inflamed. Plantar fasciitis can be mimicked by other symptoms, usually tightness in the muscles located below the plantar fascia.
Shin Splints
Shin splints cause pain or tightness in the muscles on the front of the shin. With shin splints, you'll notice pain in the front of your lower leg. Pushing on these areas is almost excruciating, and they can often get so tight it is hard to even stretch them. Left unchecked over time, we can develop other injuries as we compensate for Shin Splints.
Stress Fractures
Stress fractures are a very common diagnosis with foot and ankle issues. A stress fracture is a small fracture in our bone(s) that occurs from repeated activity. They occur because of improper body movement and can be relieved by improving our mechanics.
